What is Social Media?
As the invitation to Meet the NEW Media continues to spread on the web – many people are asking, “What is social media, Rebecca?” Following are the best definitions I can find, along with my own.
My favorite:
Social media is content created by people using highly accessible and scalable publishing technologies. At its most basic sense, social media is a shift in how people discover, read and share news, information and content. It’s a fusion of sociology and technology, transforming monologues (one to many) into dialogues (many to many) and is the democratization of information, transforming people from content readers into publishers.
Social media has become extremely popular because it allows people to connect in the online world to form and build personal and business relationships.
Knowledge Networks:
Social media users are defined as those who use any of 27 pre-specified websites commonly categorized as social media sites, or those who have used social media features on other websites that are not primarily social media sites. The list of 27 pre-specified social media sites are:
- Social media are primarily Internet-based tools for sharing and discussing information among human beings. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_media
- A category of sites that is based on user participation and user-generated content. They include social networking sites like LinkedIn, Facebook, or My Space, social bookmarking sites like Del.icio.us, social news sites like Digg or Simpy, and other sites that are centered on user interaction. www.lazworld.com/glossary.html
- Online technologies and practices that people use to share opinions, insights, experiences, and perspectives with each other. www.tvb.org/multiplatform/Multiplatform_Glossary.aspx
